Self-reflection helps you to improve

Knowledge is an important part of being productive and increasing your performance. One of the best ways to increase your knowledge is through experience but often we don’t stand still to think about what we can learn from these experiences. Taking time to reflect on things will increase your knowledge as you consciously learn from them.

This same train of thought can be applied to the work environment. We can all learn so much from situations that happen at work! If only we took the time to reflect back on them. A study conducted by Giada Di Stefano (Di-Stefano, 2014) shows that even taking 15 minutes at the end of each workday to reflect on what the most important things learned that day, will drastically increase your productivity. Even as much as 23% higher!

In addition to higher productivity and better performance, self-reflection helps people to be more confident about what they know. As they take time to think about a certain experience and what they learned from it, they will become more confident in doing the same activity but apply what they learned next time. This in turn leads to better self-esteem and self-confidence!

Self-reflection also helps with analysing bad situations that happened or mistakes you made. Reflecting on how you did something wrong will make you think and encourage you to find a solution to the problem you’re facing. Consciously thinking about what went wrong is an important step towards self-improvement, which in itself is going to impact your work positively.

Lastly, more practical advice for self-reflecting. Be sure to write down your thoughts and reflections on paper or keep an online log. This will help you remember and also give you the opportunity to revisit your thoughts later.

All of these positive effects from just reflecting shortly on your day or your week. It may seem incredible but the science is there to support it.

Start taking time to reflect on your work and you might be surprised at the results!
